The name ‘Usawa’ is Swahili for ‘equity’ and it underlines our strong belief that equity is the socio-political and economic exigency of our time in the education sector, but also in society generally. This belief is rooted in the work of our precursor (the Uwezo programme) that was implemented by Twaweza East Africa in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
We adopt citizen-led assessment (CLA) methodology to conduct large-scale surveys of the learning levels of children in Kenya. We curate and package evidence, and engage policymakers at local and global levels to shift the narrative about education from the focus on inputs to learning outcomes.
Since 2009, we have regularly conducted assessments to generate evidence on learning outcomes among children aged 6-15 years old in Kenya. The surveys, which are representative at both national and subnational levels, are household-based and are the largest, most comprehensive, independent ever conducted in Kenya.
Uwezo, the programme that has transformed into “Usawa Agenda” has an impeccable record of achievement in education. We are a founder member and co-chair of the Education Evidence for Action (EE4A), a platform that brings together select CSOs in education and the Ministry of Education of Kenya to co-create and share evidence to enhance evidence-based decision-making in the sector.
Usawa thus has commenced operations with a stellar record and a huge machinery of invaluable partnerships built over the years.
